Rich in both American and French history, St. Augustine is a hotspot for tourism and serves as an impressive backdrop for one of the world’s most amazing displays of approximately two million twinkling holiday lights in its historic district.

St. Augustine, noted for being one of the most haunted cities in America, has been called “home” by Ray Charles, Zora Neale Hurston and Stetson Kennedy.

Neighborhoods

Hastings is just 18 miles southwest of St. Augustine and is home to many St. Augustine, Jacksonville and Palatka work commuters. This charming  town was once spotlighted on television in “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” in 2009. The show’s staff joined forces with Northeast Florida Builders Association, demolishing a 1930’s dilapidated structure, replacing it with a larger two-story home in just seven days.

In the late 19th century, Henry Morrison Flagler erected hotels in St. Augustine and needed a local source of food for tourists.  He convinced Thomas Horace Hastings, his cousin, to get into the farming industry, resulting in the development of the community of Hastings in 1890. Known as the “Potato Capital of Florida”, Hastings boasts 21,000 acres of potato farms, however the community also farms ornamental horticulture, eggplant, onions and cabbage.

By 1910, Hastings was booming and the Florida East Coast Railway was known to stop there in order for travelers to visit the general stores, bakery, drug stores, butcher, ice plant, cold storage, the bank, a hotel, three doctors and a dentist. Two companies existed at the time, manufacturing grist mill ground grain and barrels. Local water and sewer utilities along with telegraph and telephone service were also a draw for tourism.

In 1924, Hasting High School was built in order to educate the children of farmers. Currently, the Hastings Branch of the St. Johns County Public Library resides in the building. Hastings was dissolved on November 7, 2017 and St. Johns County took control of the community on March 1, 2018.
