Commuting In Jacksonville, Florida

Lit

Rush Hour:

While Jacksonville’s overall commute time runs two minutes shorter than the national average, the city is not without a rush hour and delays are to be expected. Heavier traffic starts at 7 a.m. for the work crowd and goes until about 8:30-9:00 a.m. The same congestion resumes at around 4:30 p.m., further compounded by evening crowds heading out at around 6:30 p.m., at which point, you can expect heavy traffic for the rest of the evening and into the night. I-95 and I-295 connect to almost every road in the city and will be the most affected by rush hour traffic. If you plan to commute daily via these routes, search alternate surface street routes in case of traffic accidents or construction.

Part+two

Distance is not an accurate reflection of commute time as the St. Johns River runs through a major portion of the city, thus adding commute time, sometimes contingent on proximity to bridges and ferries. It is prudent to memorize the different navigable bridges in order to maximize commute time. In addition, be sure to tune in to local news and radio stations in order to be kept apprised of local construction efforts and traffic accidents. Always plan to leave early regardless of your destination.

Parking is fairly simple unless you work Downtown where you will have to pay for parking or track available parking in Jacksonville. There are 45,000 total paid parking spots among parking garages, metered parking and parking lots. Fees are strictly enforced during the week and public meters typically run $2/hour while private lots range from $1-$4/hour. Additional spaces are paid monthly for those requiring long-term parking service. Free or complimentary parking is usually available around the city’s periphery.
