There is a painful reality for children with spinal deformities in Ethiopia and it is that they face feeling isolated from communities and people. Kedir is one of the children that faced this reality. Around the age 11, Kedir’s spine started to have an abnormal curvature. His family didn’t do much since he didn’t complain of any pain. As time went on, Kedir’s spine continues to twist which is noticed by peers who then mock and ridicule him. His family was burdened with a concern of not being able to afford the treatment Kedir needed. If spinal deformities are not taken care of, they can worsen and lead to other issues like improper lung function and shorten life expectancy. With around 4 million children in Ethiopia, there is only one trained surgeon who specializes in this kind of operation. This makes it extremely difficult to find care or pay for the care if found. TTF partners with CURE International who help children like Kedir receive treatment for spinal deformities.
