From the moment Theo was born, his parents loved him despite the doctors telling them about his condition and disability. Many parents or communities in Zimbabwe would view disabilities as a curse or someone’s fault. Theo’s parents truly believed that he was a blessing from God and wanted him to grow up knowing that he is loved.
His mother, Florence, searched all over in hospitals for a surgeon to perform an operation to help her son. It was a challenge since the hospitals didn’t have the orthopedic surgery he needed. They also struggled with if they found a place that could perform the operation, they wouldn’t be able to afford the surgery and recovery. Florence seeked out assistance and was able to acquire a wheelchair so Theo could attend school. Theo struggled in school due to peers teasing him and the campus was not easily accessible for his wheelchair.
Despite the trials and challenges Theo and his parents faced during this time, they remained hopeful. Florence was referred to TTF’s partner ministry, CURE International and was able to have the operation Theo needed. CURE International helps families and children with disabilities receive the care and surgeries they need without the worry of finances. Theo’s surgery was successful and allowed him to eventually be fitted for a prosthesis to aid him in his recovery.
