What Is Baker County, Florida Known For?

Baker County has a couple of noteworthy historical attractions. First is Heritage Park Village in Macclenny. Heritage Park gives visitors a glimpse into what life was like for the pioneers who first settled in the Macclenny area, back when the town was known for logging.

The park features replicas and restorations of historical buildings. These buildings serve as museums about Macclenny and Baker County history. Throughout the year, it also hosts live events and holiday festivals.

Another must-see site is Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park, which was the site of the largest Civil War battle in Florida. Visitors can walk around the park and learn about the February 1864 battle. 

Every February, visitors can witness a reenactment of the battle at the park. The weeklong-long event also features memorial services, demonstrations, concerts, parades, and a ball where participants must wear historically-accurate outfits.

Parks and Recreation

If you love the outdoors, Baker County is for you! Osceola National Forest is a great place to come up for a day to hike, bike, or swim in the beautiful 220,000-acre park. Or, stay for a few days and go camping, fishing, horseback riding, or hunting. 

 For even more adventurous types, the National Forest is perfect for backpackers. It contains a 23-mile section of the Florida National Scenic Trail.

Another option is John M. Bethea State Forest, a 37,735-acre forest near the small town of Glen St. Mary. Park visitors can enjoy a number of outdoor activities, including hiking, picnicking, canoeing, horseback riding, hunting, and fishing.

Baker County is ideally situated close to Interstates 10 and 75, which connect it to Jacksonville and the Georgia border.
